ITU Habana CAMTRI Cup
February 28, 2018
One week after his win at the ITU Bridgetown CAMTRI Sprint, John Rasmussen lined up in Cuba at the Standard distance ITU Habana CAMTRI Cup (S:1500m, B:40k, R:10k). John's race plan anticipated a small breakaway on the swim, but an in-water start with lots of contact resulted in the bulk of the field coming into T1 together. The 40k bike was largely uneventful, with 14 of the original 16 riders staying together, setting up a running race to determine the podium. John moved to the front early in the run in, separating himself from all contenders, only to be caught by hard charging Portuguese athletes Alexandre Nobre and Miguel Arraiolos by the 6km marker. The trio ran together until the last kilometer, when Nobre and Arraiolos surged to secure gold and silver, with John coming home in third place. With two back-to-back ITU podiums to his credit, John travels down under to compete in the ITU Mooloolaba World Cup in Australia, followed by the ITU New Plymouth World Cup in New Zealand.
